A Note from Nurse

How to survive the New Year Heat!

We are all excited about the New Year Holiday! I hear many of the students talking about travel plans and holiday activities. During your planning please remember your children are used to being in Air Conditioning during the school hours, so expecting them to handle the heat of your family village or parent’s home without air conditioning might be more than they can handle. And if you’re not traveling, but remaining home the principle is the same, prevention.

Heat-related death or illnesses are preventable if you follow a few simple steps:
Stay in an air-conditioned area during the hottest hours of the day. If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, go to a public place such as a shopping mall or a grocery store to stay cool. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Drink water often. Don’t wait until you are thirsty. Avoid unnecessary hard work or activities if you are outside or in a building without air-conditioning. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure. When in the sun, wear a hat, preferably with a wide brim. Air conditioning is the strongest protective factor against heat-related illness. Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours a day will reduce the risk for heat-related illness. CDC guidelines for extreme heat

Please put a sachet of rehydration powder in your children’s backpack like Royal D that is easily available at grocery stores and Cambodian Pharmacy. A whole box of Royal D which contains 50 packets cost around $7.00. Encourage your children to drink more water and use ice in their bottles to help them cool down while at school. We look forward to an active and fun last two months of classes!
